How The Big Berkey Water Filter Works:
Each Berkey® system consists of an upper and lower chamber. Water is poured into the top chamber, where gravity pushes it into the filters. The filtered water collects in the lower chamber, where it can be dispensed through a spigot.
The Berkey Secret
MICROFILTRATION
The first line of defense is that Berkey® elements are composed of a proprietary formulation of more than six different media types, all constructed into a very compact matrix containing millions of microscopic pores. These pores are so small that they produce what we refer to as a “Tortuous Path” that pathogenic bacteria, cysts, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, VOC’s, detergents, cloudiness, silt, sediment and sedimentary minerals, foul tastes and odours must travel through. These paths are so small that these pollutants physically cannot pass through them and become trapped, eliminating them from your drinking water. This process is known as microfiltration.
ADSORPTION
Secondly, our media formulation uses unique adsorption and absorption properties. Adsorption works to create an ionic barrier similar to surface tension. This barrier is perfectly suited to the micro-porous water filter because it effectively allows the tiny pores to block water contaminants that are smaller than the pore size itself. This blocking process is how the Berkey® water filter is able to remove submicron viruses that other brands of water filters cannot, without the use of obnoxious chemicals like iodine or chlorine. Next, the heavy metals ions (mineral molecules) such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, aluminum, and other dangerous heavy metals are extracted from the water through an Ion exchange process where they are attracted to and transformed by electrically bonding to the media.
FLOW RATE
Finally, Berkey® systems are so effective at removing contaminants from water because of the extremely long “contact period”. Other filtration systems rely on water pressure that forces water molecules through the elements at 60-90 PSI. These water molecules come into contact with the filter media for a mere fraction of a second. By comparison, water molecules passing through the structure of the Black Berkey® elements are drawn gently by gravity and stay in contact with the media for a long period of time. This allows the filter media to be more efficient in capturing contaminants. This advanced technology was developed, refined, and proven through years of diligent, investigative research and testing performed by water purification specialists, researchers, and engineers. The flow rate or time of exposure through the Black Berkey® elements has been calculated to yield the greatest volume of removal of viruses, toxic chemicals, and bacteria.

I have found this excellent. I had used one in Rural Africa for years and never had any problems with water not having it would have meant boiling water or buying water which was very expensive.
So when i saw them here I got one and nhere you can also get a filter for flouride removal.
The other thing is there is no electric need so if there was problem it could just be filled with any water.
It is easy to clean the filters as well.

Best purchase I have made this year. I purchased this as my mother has one and loved the taste of her water and no more chlorine smells. We use it so much that in hindsight, I should have gone bigger. We are a 5 person house with animals (who drink Berkey water also), I fill the boiling jug with the water and we drink alot of water so the Big Berkey is used heavily. I would laterally go as far as saying that Berkeys are gods gift to humanity! You will be extremely hard pressed to find a better water purifier than this. Everything about it is just amazing. So simple, so neat, so elegant and the water tastes divine. I genuinely am sorry for those that don’t have a Berkey and have no idea just how bad the water is for those having to drink tap water. This is a REAL filtration system, not some mumbo jumbo contraption. If you don’t have one you and your family are missing out. You defenitely need one of these and trust me it will be one of the best purchases you have ever made, ever! I promise. By the way I personally thought is was going to be much bigger! So was a bit surprised when the Big Berkey Water Filter (8.5 L) arrived and was quite small. I thought it wasn’t going to be anywhere near big enough for my family of 6. However so long as you buy a water level sight and keep an eye on the water level and just top it up with water daily (which is so fast and easy to do takes 5 seconds) we haven’t even run out of water yet! And so therefore I absolutely love that it is a smaller size as I like it compact and not taking up unnecessary space.
