Some Frequently Asked Questions on our Emergency Foods

A: This depends upon where you live.  Meals made of both freeze-dry and dehydrated components are affected by temperature, moisture and light. Optimal storage conditions for our meals are in cool, dry places.

A: On average, each individual serving requires 1 cup of water.

A: Hot water speeds up the process of reconstitution.  Wise meals will be ready to eat more quickly when hot water is used, just 12-15 minutes and you’re ready to eat. However, many of the meals can be re-hydrated and ready to eat with any temperature of water.

A: 100% of our meals are packaged in mylar pouches.  These pouches are then arranged in durable polyethylene buckets for easy storage.

Smart Packaging

Wise’s unique packaging adds value to their meals by protecting them better and making them easier to store and easier to prepare.

Nitrogen-Flushed Pouch

Wise Company’ ready-made meals are packed in airtight NITROGEN PACKED pouches.  This unique packaging process removes the majority of the residual oxygen and immediately flushes the Mylar bag with nitrogen. So then you don’t have to worry about removing an oxygen absorber from each individual pouch before preparation.

Mylar Family-size 4-serving Foil Pouch

This unique packaging makes it easier to store, eat, and further prolong the shelf life of each individual meal. Instead of using #10 cans—where you have to then eat enormous amounts of that particular food in one go to prevent rapid spoilage—we package each meal in its own separate mylar pouch, thus eliminating waste. It’s basically a flexible tin can that gives you the ability to eat what you want, when you want.

Square Plastic Container and Grab—and—Go Handle

Then these 4-serving pouches are placed into compact, 18- and 20-litre, square buckets that are easy to stack and store.  Because we don’t waste space by using and boxing #10 cans. Wise Company food storage is much more compact and takes significantly less space.  Also, because the buckets are small and light, even children are able to grab and carry a month’s supply of food, if needed.  If you are placed in an emergency situation these buckets can also serve several other purposes, such as digging or disposing of waste.

Stackable Design

Each container is notched on the bottom to ensure stackability.

Typical food storage can take an incredible amount of space to store that most families don’t have.  Other food storage companies will want you to purchase a year’s supply comprising as many as 85 large cases of awkward and bulky #10 cans.

In no more space than a washing machine and dryer takes up, you can store enough ready-made meals to feed a family of 6 for a full year.

Re-sealable Pull Tab Lid

Have you ever tried to open the lid of a 20-litre bucket typically used for food storage?  As you know it can be a real pain. Wise Company’s unique bucket contains an easy-to-open, easy-to-close re-sealable pull tab lid.

A: If you prepare only the portion you will be eating, the rest of the food (dry in the pouch) will be good on the shelf for another couple of weeks. So only prepare as much as you need in one sitting

A: Studies have proven that freeze-dry and dehydrated foods will last up to 25 years or even longer. For optimal storage life it is suggested that food be stored in a cool, dry place, such as a basement, with room temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees celcius.

Shelf life estimates are based on industry studies from sources deemed reputable.  Since Wise Company has no control over individual storage practices, they must disclaim any liability or warranty for particular results.  The shelf live stated on Wise Company products are based on a “will sustain life” shelf life. This means that although time and heat may degrade the nutrition, color, and texture of all foods, our products will still be safe to eat and sustain life through the stated shelf life.

Because our mains won’t need to be rotated every few years like other food storage products, buying Wise Company meals will save you thousands of dollars in the long-term as the cost of food continues to increase.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) calculates the average cost to feed a family of 2 adults and 4 children is USD$14,955.60 per year.  This equates to NZD$17,594.82 at current exchange rates. Wise Company ready-made meals are approximately NZ$3.48 a serving, making them truly affordable. Our prices are low because we want to help protect your most important asset, your family.

A: The absolute bare minimum is to have 72 hours worth of food for every family member. However in any lasting emergency you would be wise to have significantly more. So go to our Food Storage Calculator and enter in the number of adults and children in your family/household and how many months food you’d like to determine your exact needs.

A: Wise Company uses a best of breed approach. Certain ingredients set-up and taste better when freeze-dried (vegetables, fruits, meats) while others do better through dehydration. In these cases, dehydrated ingredients offer all the benefits and better value than foods that have been freeze-dried.

Expensive ingredients such as peas and other vegetables are generally freeze-dried.  Other ingredients like noodles and rice actually taste better when dehydrated.

Freeze-Dry and Dehydration Advantages:

• Food maintains its original flavor, shape, color, and texture

• Food retains its nutritional value

• Food is condensed in size

• With nearly all its water extracted, food is extremely light weight

• With the addition of water, food is quickly and completely reconstituted

• Wise Company customers enjoy peace of mind because of the food’s long shelf life

The Freeze-Dry Process

In freeze-drying, the product is first flash frozen and then placed in a vacuum drying chamber.  This process removes the majority of the water and moistening without affecting the taste, color, form or nutritional value of the food item.

The Dehydration Process

In dehydration, food product moves through a drying chamber where air removes the moisture from the food. This occurs at low temperatures so that the nutritional profile stays intact.
