How the Sport Berkey Water Bottle Works:
As the Sport Berkey bottle is squeezed, the water is forced through the filter. The density and quality of media used determine the rate of adsorption. The time of exposure through the filter has been carefully calculated to yield the greatest volume removal of toxic chemicals and pollution caused by industry and agriculture. The exclusive filter element of this Sport Bottle is composed of our exclusive proprietary “adsorbing” media that promotes IONIC “adsorption” of pollutants, such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, aluminum, mercury, and other dangerous heavy metals.
The “Tortuous Path” structure of the Sport Berkey’s filter element gives it its unique characteristics. This filter is a true portable Water filter and uses medical grade technology to produce a convenient and portable water filtration system.
About Berkey Water Systems – The Berkey Secret
The Sport Berkey® Bottle uses the same filtration medium as the larger Black Berkey® Purification Elementss, which are used in free-standing Berkey® gravity-fed systems. Here’s how it works…
The first line of defense is that Berkey® purification elements are composed of a proprietary formulation of more than six different media types, all constructed into a very compact matrix containing millions of microscopic pores. These pores are so small that they produce what we refer to as a “Tortuous Path” that pathogenic bacteria, cysts, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, VOC’s, detergents, cloudiness, silt, sediment and sedimentary minerals, foul tastes and odours must travel through. These paths are so small that these pollutants physically cannot pass through them and become trapped, eliminating them from your drinking water. This process is known as microfiltration.
Secondly, our media formulation uses unique adsorption and absorption properties. Adsorption works to create an ionic barrier similar to surface tension. This barrier is perfectly suited to the micro-porous water filter because it effectively allows the tiny pores to block water contaminants that are smaller than the pore size itself. This blocking process is how the Berkey® water filter is able to remove submicron viruses that other brands of water filters cannot, without the use of obnoxious chemicals like iodine or chlorine. Next, the heavy metals ions (mineral molecules) such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, aluminium, and other dangerous heavy metals are extracted from the water through an Ion exchange process where they are attracted to and transformed by electrically bonding to the media.
Features and Benefits of the Berkey® Sport Bottle and Berkey® Systems:
READY FOR ANY ADVENTURE – The Berkey® Sport Bottle was designed for use while camping, on trips, exercising, biking, backpacking, in the car, and unexpected emergencies.
ECONOMICAL AND LONG LASTING – The Sport Berkey® bottle has a storage life of 50 years and provides about 160 refills when using raw and untreated water, or about 640 refills using everyday drinking water.
NON-LEACHING PLASTIC CONSTRUCTION – The Sport Berkey® Bottle is made from a non-leaching, LDPE #4 medical grade polymer, which is BPA-free.
POWERFUL – Berkey® systems can easily purify ordinary tap water yet they are so powerful that they efficiently purify raw, untreated water from such sources as remote lakes and streams. What’s more, Berkey® systems are the ideal water purification systems to have on hand in the event of natural disasters as well as local or national emergencies when treated tap water may not be available.
HEALTHY – Berkey® systems are far superior to other filtration systems because they remove viruses, harmful pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites as well as unhealthy chemical contaminants and impurities while leaving in the essential minerals your body needs. Berkey® systems produce virtually the most healthful, clean and delicious water available.
INDEPENDENT TESTING – Berkey® by NMCL uses several independent third-party labs to test a broad range of potential contaminants.

How do I remove mould and mildew from the straw in the Sport Berkey®?
This can occur on occasion. Typically, it means that the top & straw (and bottle) are in need of a good soapy cleaning. Follow standard cleaning procedures which are on the instructions that come with each bottle. In some cases, it may be necessary to soak the top/straw for a bit before cleaning, or use a fine brush in the straw. Typically soaking in soapy water or vinegar water takes care of any build-up inside the top/straw. Rinse thoroughly. Again, it is important to periodically clean the bottle, top & straw to help keep this from occurring in the future.
What is the maximum temperature that the Sport Berkey® can be stored at? I want to put it in the trunk of my car and need to know if it would be too hot.
The maximum amount of heat the Sport Berkey® can withstand is 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit).
Can I filter boiling water through the Sport Berkey® for making hot tea?
Hot water can break down the element and compromise its efficiency, so we recommend that you first filter the source water through the Sport Berkey® then afterward boil the filtered water for your tea.
How do I clean the bottle of my Sport Berkey® Portable Water Filter?
The Sport Berkey® Portable Water Filter has a shelf life of 50 years. When the filter system will not be used for an extended period, remove filter and fill the unit with either chlorinated bleach of 1/4 tsp. per one half gallon of water, or a 50/50 mix of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide. Rinse. Allow parts to dry thoroughly with cap removed. Re-assemble and seal in an air tight container if possible. Do not allow filter to freeze, do not place in microwave oven and do not run hot water through the filter.
We recommend that the bleach used, not be scented or in any other way enhanced. If you are not aware, many bleaches today come with “other things” in them to provide a nice smell, etc. We don’t recommend these types of bleaches.
Before First Use:
Pour water into the Sport Berkey and securely tighten the cap to eliminate leaks. Pull down the loop on the lid to extend the straw and squeeze the bottle. This will force water through the filter and the straw. Empty as much of the bottle as possible. Repeat this process two times. This process flushes manufacturing dust from the filter. After two flushes, rinse the bottle and cap. Your water bottle is now ready for use!
