TRAVEL BERKEY SPECIFICATIONS:
- Storage capacity of about 5.67 litres (1.5 gallons)
- Maximum Filters: 2 Black Berkey Elements (in upper chamber) [2 are included]
- Height when in use: 46 cm (18″)
- Compact height for transport (Upper chamber nests within the lower chamber): 30.5 cm (12″)
- Diameter: 19 cm (7.5″)
- Weight: 3.18 kgs (7 lbs) when empty
- Serves: 1-3 people. Ideal for travel as fits in most suitcases. Great for an apartment or small kitchen bench.
- Maximum Filtration Flow Rate in Travel Berkey System:
- Configured with two Black Berkey Elements, the Travel Berkey system can produce up to 10.4 litres (2.75 gallons) per hour. Note: Flow rate calculated with upper chamber full to top. Flow rate decreases as water level decreases.
- Durability: Each Black Berkey element is designed to purify approximately 11,350 litres (3,000 gallons) of water before needing replacement; 2 elements in a Berkey system will filter approximately 22,700 litres (6,000 gallons) of water before replacement is recommended
Remove Fluoride & Arsenic:
Optional extra: Up to 2 PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Filters may be installed in the lower chamber of this system if desired. (NOTE: You must have the same number of PF-2 Fluoride & Arsenic Filters in the lower chamber as Black Berkey Filters in the upper chamber. i.e. 2 in the top, must have 2 in the bottom.) The majority of New Zealand town water supplies have fluoride added, so this is a must if you wish to remove fluoride from your drinking water.

About Berkey Water Systems
How The Travel Berkey Water Filter Works:
Each Berkey® system consists of an upper and lower chamber. Water is poured into the top chamber, where gravity pushes it into the filters. The filtered water collects in the lower chamber, where it can be dispensed through a spigot.
The Berkey Secret
The first line of defense is that Berkey® elements are composed of a proprietary formulation of more than six different media types, all constructed into a very compact matrix containing millions of microscopic pores. These pores are so small that they produce what we refer to as a “Tortuous Path” that pathogenic bacteria, cysts, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, VOC’s, detergents, cloudiness, silt, sediment and sedimentary minerals, foul tastes and odours must travel through. These paths are so small that these pollutants physically cannot pass through them and become trapped, eliminating them from your drinking water. This process is known as microfiltration.
Secondly, our media formulation uses unique adsorption and absorption properties. Adsorption works to create an ionic barrier similar to surface tension. This barrier is perfectly suited to the micro-porous water filter because it effectively allows the tiny pores to block water contaminants that are smaller than the pore size itself. This blocking process is how the Berkey® water filter is able to remove submicron viruses that other brands of water filters cannot, without the use of obnoxious chemicals like iodine or chlorine. Next, the heavy metals ions (mineral molecules) such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, aluminium, and other dangerous heavy metals are extracted from the water through an Ion exchange process where they are attracted to and transformed by electrically bonding to the media.
Finally, Berkey® systems are so effective at removing contaminants from water because of the extremely long “contact period”. Other filtration systems rely on water pressure that forces water molecules through the elements at 60-90 PSI. These water molecules come into contact with the filter media for a mere fraction of a second. By comparison, water molecules passing through the structure of the Black Berkey® elements are drawn gently by gravity and stay in contact with the media for a long period of time. This allows the filter media to be more efficient in capturing contaminants. This advanced technology was developed, refined, and proven through years of diligent, investigative research and testing performed by water filtration specialists, researchers, and engineers. The flow rate or time of exposure through the Black Berkey® elements has been calculated to yield the greatest volume of removal of viruses, toxic chemicals, and bacteria.
Features and Benefits of the Berkey® Systems:
HEALTHY – Berkey® systems are far superior to other filtration systems because they remove viruses, harmful pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites as well as unhealthy chemical contaminants and impurities while leaving in the essential minerals your body needs. Berkey® systems produce virtually the most healthful, clean and delicious water available.
CONVENIENCE – Berkey® systems assemble in minutes without tools, electricity, water pressure, or plumbing. What’s more, they are simple to operate and maintain.
ECONOMICAL – Berkey® systems are easily the most economical water purification systems that you can own. Their unique design allows you to easily remove and re-clean the filtration elements over and over again.
POWERFUL – Berkey® systems can easily filter ordinary tap water yet they are so powerful that they efficiently filter raw, untreated water from such sources as remote lakes and streams. What’s more, Berkey® systems are the ideal water filtration systems to have on hand in the event of natural disasters as well as local or national emergencies when treated tap water may not be available.
ELEGANCE – The elegant high-grade polished 304 stainless steel design makes Berkey® systems an attractive addition to any kitchen or home yet each system is both rugged and durable.
Test Results for Black Berkey Elements
The Black Berkey Elements are formulated to address 200+ typical contaminants found in tap water and other freshwater sources. The gold standard in gravity-fed water filtration, authentic Black Berkey® Elements are capable of greater contaminant reduction and a longer lifespan than virtually any of the other filter elements on the market.
Here is a knowledge base article from the Berkey Manufacturers website. It contains the complete list of all impurities for which the Black Berkey elements have been tested, along with full laboratory test results:
Independent Test Results
See how the Big Berkey came out a clear winner in independent unpaid for testing of 6 gravity water filters:
“When it comes to reliable removal of toxic elements such as lead, cadmium, arsenic and even uranium, Big Berkey is the best performing gravity water filter available on the market today.”
Concerned About Glyphosate Herbicide in Your Water?
Berkey test results have shown a reduction of glyphosate in your water by greater than 75%. An independent test found the Berkey is one of the few water filters to remove 100% of glyphosate. (Note: Testing was conducted with the optional Arsenic and Fluoride Reduction Elements attached).
Concerned About Lead Contamination in Your Drinking Water?
The Black Berkey Element used in all Berkey Systems has been tested to remove at least 99% of Lead from water.
